I’ve been taking care of my skin since I was 12 years old. Back then, I listened to the advice of older women who insisted on gentle cleansers and the importance of never going to bed with makeup on. Universal truths then, universal truths now. I do wish we’d been more aware of the benefits of sunscreen back then, but it’s never too late to start.

Today, in my early 60s, I still carry those habits with me, and yes—I also get beauty treatments. Botox? Sure. Facials? Absolutely. Sculptra? A resounding yes! But none of it matters if we don’t feel good on the inside. Trust me, no cosmetic procedure can cover up a sour mood.

Because self-care looks different for everyone. For me, it’s practicing yoga in the morning, writing in my journal, and yes, booking that appointment at my dermatologist’s office. There’s no shame in wanting to look refreshed, just as there’s no shame in embracing every wrinkle and gray hair. We can hold both truths.

And while happiness comes from within, I won’t deny that certain beauty and self-care rituals have become sacred parts of my routine. Here are a few that work for me:
