People often tell me I’m so disciplined.
“You’re so focused. So productive. You get so much done.”
Let me be real with you: I’m not disciplined. I’m compulsive.
What most people call “willpower” in me is actually the result of learning how to work with my flaws, not against them. I’m not a model of self-control. I’m just someone who figured out how to channel an addictive, obsessive personality into something productive. And if I can redefine my so-called flaws, so can you.
The Flawed Beginning
From a young age, I knew I was wired differently. I was a straight-A student, but I’d get physically sick from the stress of wanting to be perfect. By 16, I developed an eating disorder that swung between anorexia and bulimia. I’ve also lived with clinical depression and anxiety.
