When I turned 60, that came a lot of reflection -not just about where I’d been, but where I’m going. One thing I keep circling back to is how often we unconsciously buy into limiting beliefs about aging, not just from others, but from ourselves.
I call it self-ageism -those sneaky thoughts that creep in and tell us we’re too old for something we secretly want to do.
And yes, even someone like me, who has built a platform around positive aging and reinvention, falls into that trap sometimes, although I’m getting better and better at nipping it in the bud.
What Self-Ageism Sounds Like
“I’m too old for TikTok.”
“I shouldn’t wear this at my age.”
“I don’t belong here- I’m the oldest person in the room.”
“I’m dating myself, but… (I used to rent VHS tapes from Blockbuster, for example)”
